Extra Fruits and Veggies Don't Help Prevent Cancer... That Much

Media_httplittleredco_hrnyp

A huge nine-year study of diet and cancer, involving nearly a half-million Europeans in 10 countries, finds... those who get an extra two servings of fruits and veggies a day lower their cancer risk by only four percent -- NPR

Lung Cancer Study II

Media_httpsportsvenue_jwphc

Only 15% of lung cancer cases are discovered while the tumor is in the early stages of development

The second most common cancer is lung cancer.  Last year in the US, nearly 220,000 people were newly diagnosed with lung cancer.  That is more than double the amount of people that fit in the Michigan Stadium.  The high number of those affected could be lowered through the use of early diagnosis techniques.

One early diagnosis technique involves the use of biomarkers.  Biomarkers are biological molecules which are used to measure the progress of disease.  They are also used to measure the effects of treatment.

Dr. Sung Baek and fellow researchers from The Institute of Drug Development study biomarkers.  They identified potential biomarkers for lung cancer and asthma.  The greater understanding of lung cancer and asthma biomarkers may greatly lower the number of lung cancer deaths.

Lung Cancer Study

Media_httpwwwharrijah_rhild

The Identification of Lung Cancer Biomarkers is Essential for Early Diagnosis

The leading cause of cancer-related deaths is lung cancer.  The death total is approximately 160,000 per year.  That equals the total number of people in attendance at the 2008 Beijing Olympic opening ceremony.  The high death rate could be lowered through the use of early diagnosis techniques.

One early diagnosis technique involves the use of biomarkers.  Biomarkers are biological molecules which are used to measure the progress of disease.  They are also used to measure the effects of treatment.

Dr. Sung Baek and fellow researchers from The Institute of Drug Development study biomarkers.  They identified potential biomarkers for lung cancer.  They also analyzed two natural products that demonstrated anticancer activities.  Their greater understanding of biomarkers and the use of the natural products may greatly lower the number of lung cancer deaths.
