In 1950 approximately 80% of chickens were 'free range', by 1980 only 1% were 'free range.'  Today it is back up to 12% -- foodreference.com

In the 1950's, a free-range chicken ate bugs, grass, leaves, plant roots, and any other feed available to them. That plant material was rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Today, many of the chickens are fed a corn and soy-based feed. That feed is rich in Omega-6 fatty acids.

Americans eat 15-16.7 times too much Omega-6 (veggies, vegetable based snacks, vegetable oils) Than Omega-3 (meat, fish, butter). This imbalance causes disease.
