I got my puppy Sheldon right after I graduated college, and boy, he's a lot of work! The best advice I can offer is to someone looking to get a puppy is to make sure you get one that fits your personality. Don't get a pet that needs a lot of exercise if you don't like to exercise!

Looking back, I don't know what I'd do without my puppy! He's so loyal and he's always there for me--to use the phrase he's "Man's best friend." Plus he's the ultimate snuggler so I always have a lap-heater! :) Here he is in his Halloween costume... http://twitpic.com/pwuzt

P.S. If you can, get a puppy from a shelter, not a breeder! There are so many dogs who need homes you shouldn't have to spend a fortune on one from a breeder!

A) The joys of pet ownership
Pets are loyal in a way humans could possibly never comprehend. They are part of your family. And just like siblings, you grow up with them - literally. You need to appreciate them just like family...because they appreciate and love you too. The kind of joy they are capable of bringing to your life is just like the way you mean the world to them...because you are.

B) The challenges
Pets can't understand you so you need to find different ways to train them. They respond to the tone in your voice and the way you touch them. They won't know when it's ok to potty or to defend their territory...you need to be patient and teach them these things over time. Just like people, they all have different personalities. For example, cats are independant while dogs require a lot more hrs in a day in terms of attention.

C) Your advice to kids about the overall responsibility???
Just like anyone you love, you need to love your pets too. You need to be responsible as well as build and nurture your relationship with them. Be patient with them when they adapting to your home. It's like taking care of a baby. You wouldn't hit a baby for spilling milk, same way you need to be patient enough to potty train & set boundaries for your pet. What he/she can or cannot do. Most importantly, give them the kind of attention you would want too. Love, food, medical attention & reward for when they do something good.

We have two Burmilla kittens called Saffie + Clawdia.
They are totally adorable and the best of friends too!
I love having them around, they are graceful and
loving housecats.
Here's a picture: http://www.facebook.com/#/photo.php?pid=1005829&id=1468510212

and here's a poem I wrote about them:
The Sophisticats

Slinky, Purry, furry beasts
so gentle on your tabby feet.
With elegance you trot along
Your presence felt, oh so strong.
Though delicate your features are,
you've also a wild side, true.
Seen when you menace butterflies
and snack on spiders too!
